Serene landscapes, rugged mountains, and a growing system of nature reserves and national parks make Vietnam a favorite destination for hiking, backpacking, and camping. Whether you are an active traveler seeking new challenges or planning a more leisurely journey down “the road less traveled,” there are some basic safety tips to keep in mind when you are trekking in the Vietnamese countryside.

Drink more water! Dehydration can set in quickly, especially with physical exertion in a hot climate. Keep water handy and drink it regularly.
Pace yourself. Starting too fast can wear you out before you cover much ground. The slowest hiker in a group should set the pace, and it's a good idea to take frequent breaks -- if not for your legs' sake, then for the scenery!
Bring enough clothes to handle any weather conditions you might encounter. A cool night or stiff breeze will make you appreciate the overshirt you've been carrying. You should be dressed comfortably while hiking, though it's better to be a little cool than overheated.
Proper footwear is essential. Boots should be broken in before your journey!
Don’t overpack. Whatever you bring along, you'll have to carry every step of the way. Don't skimp on essentials, but remember that less is more.
Be careful! This may seem like obvious advice but the remote mountain trails of Vietnam are not the best place to injure yourself. Step mindfully, especially in rough terrain!
